STAR*SMART: Fall Equinox starts with the Lunar Eclipse 29 Virgo!
The Lunar Eclipse, at the last degree of Virgo, is 4:45 AM. The moment
of
Fall Equinox, the very next degree, 0 Libra, is 9:04 PM. The baton of the
Summer Quarter will be passed to the Fall Quarter. With life well
organized, we hope, the foundation is set to move out into the world, less
work, more social. The Fall social season is upon us! First comes
Scorpio’s Halloween, who am I really? Then comes Thanksgiving, sharing
yourself, the best bounty of all. Last is Hanukkah Dec 16, then as Winter
starts, Christmas, gifting each other with cherished rewards.
These are the last few days
of the Jupiter square Neptune suite of aspects.
This is the 2nd to last of all the aspect combos, exact Sep 24. The very
last aspect is the Jupiter square Saturn finishing Oct 25. Please see last

Pluto is now a dwarf planet,
but business will go on as usual, Pluto firmly
in our astrological charts, doing what it does! Xena, also a dwarf planet,
now named Eris (Ephemeris),
has joined our ranks, along with her, HER,
Moon Dysnomia. Say what?! Eris, disrupted the forced wedding of Peleus
and Thetis when she did not receive an invitation, caused a quarrel among
goddesses that sparked the Trojan War, earning her the title of Goddess
of Discord! Dysnomia, the daughter of Eris, was known as the spirit of
lawlessness. Ho, watch out! Nobody taking a back seat here! May I
remind you that not all discord is bad. Think of it as stirring the brew!
Traditionally, the interpretation
of a planet in our Western culture starts
with the name and events surrounding its discovery. Eris already has a
strong presence with the astronomical community twice! First there was
controversy over the manner of the announcement of her discovery due to
an error in a line of code that was meant to keep discovery records private,
then came the upheaval with Pluto. We also look at the properties of the
body itself. We track history as it changes signs, in this case long times
since Eris’s 44 degree much elongated orbit is 558 years! As she travels,
she makes various combinations with other planets that will further flesh
out her nature. Eventually the Sign she will be associated with will
settle and stick as we try different cloaks for her.

up. Exchanges ideas, save the day. Hone your partnering skills. Our
relationships are a metaphor for how we get along in the world. Take your
newfound negotiating skills learned at work, as appropriately, home to your
family. Sell stock in your company, merge forces. Trade with no taxation,
use mediation. Learn listening skills, not interrupting. Get to the point
when it is your turn. Time is a resource, make it count well. Learn potent
presentation skills, we have much we need to share, the sooner the better.

EARTH & STARS! Orionids Meteor Showers Oct 21
Oh boy, get out the telescopes,
it’s a New Moon, dark sky, the best!
dress warmly, especially a cap/headcover – we lose 50% or more of our
body heat from our heads! Take food, thermoses of hot chocolate, bug
spray, a comfy seat, for max comfort, a reclining lounge chair so you can
look up, or if you will be lying on the ground, a thick ground cover for
insulation. Also, a red-filtered flashlight for reading maps and charts
without ruining your night vision. Binoculars are not necessary. Your eyes
will do just fine. It is also a good idea to nap before a watch and to be well
rested when attempting to observe. You certainly will not see much
meteor activity through closed eyelids! Enjoy!
Best seen during the early
morning hours, about 5 AM at its peak, the
number of Orionids that are seen is around 15 to 25 per hour. This is one
of two meteor showers that are associated with Comet Halley.
How can I best view a meteor
shower? From Stardate.org
Drive away from the glow
of city lights and toward the constellation from
which the meteors will appear to radiate, in this case, the Orion/Gemini
border, three degrees west of the bright star Alhena (Gamma Geminorum).
Find a dark, secluded spot where oncoming car headlights will not
periodically ruin your sensitive night vision. Look for state or city parks
or
other safe, dark sites.
Once you have settled at
your observing spot, lay back or position yourself
so the horizon appears at the edge of your peripheral vision, with the stars
and sky filling your field of view. Meteors will instantly grab your attention
as they streak by. If you can see each star of the Little Dipper, your eyes
have "dark adapted," and your chosen site is probably dark enough.
Under
these conditions, you will see plenty of meteors.
Avoid looking straight up
as this direction has the thinnest slice of
atmosphere. That's great for telescopic work but not for viewing meteor
activity. Aim your view a bit closer to the horizon and you will be viewing
though a much thicker slice of the atmosphere, allowing you to see more
meteor activity.
Plan to watch for at least
an hour. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see
many at first, they often come in spurts about a ½ hour apart. If you

Earth Vespers celebrating the Fall Equinox were held in Placitas
at
the Jubilee Garden. The service began with a gratitude prayer for the
waters from the acequias, remembering those who have passed, followed
by a short walk to the gardens where prayers, songs, blessing of seeds
and prayer formed the context of a special ritual. Celebrants then feasted
on the foods from the garden.
