Think about using the 12 houses as a template for a body of information
on each sign. For example, if Scorpio was the sign on every cusp, what
would you say? You can compare the opposite houses to strengthen
your distinctions. Notice the link from one house to the next, how do
they build from one to another. Mark out the angular houses and go for
them first, since they are the starting points for each quarter. Be
thorough, do just one sign. Take your time, do it justice. Perhaps use a
person you admire or love as the person you would like to have this full
repertoire of their sign for them, to understand them more intimately.

Yaron Livne goes about it another way, puts Scorpio at the Ascendant,
then goes around the houses putting the signs in order, looking at some
of life’s important issues. See her example, a lot of good insights.

Here is how it starts:

On November 3, 1939, at 11:21 A.M., in Jamaica, Queens County,
New York, I was born "Franklin Albert Jones".

The sign of my birth is Scorpio, marked by the images of Spirit and of Sex,
the eagle and the crab. It is the sign of internal warfare, the problem and
perfection. The sign of Scorpio should indicate to you the kinds of forces
that aligned to generate my birth. Whatever significance you may attribute
to astrology, it is true that my personal life has often cycled high and low,
marked by equal and opposing determinations to ascend and to descend.
And the external adventure of my life has turned me in and out of every
kind of religious and Spiritual path, every kind of ascending means, and
(likewise) every form of pleasure, ecstasy, and self indulgence.

The signs of my birth suggest (and have required) a drama of opposites.
However, in spite of all of that, it has also been my lot to remain untouched
by cosmic and human circumstance. This is perhaps the first key to what I
must Communicate. From the beginning, I have also Known a perfect
Alternative to the revolutionary internal dilemma of my natural existence. I
have played in the problem of my alternatives, but from my earliest
experience of life I have Enjoyed a Condition that, as a child, I called the
"Bright". I have always known desire, not merely for extreme pleasures of the
senses and the mind, but for the highest Enjoyment of Spiritual Power and
Mobility. But I have not been seated in desire, and desire has only been a
play that I have grown to understand and enjoy without conflict. I have always
been Seated in the "Bright".

Origins of Samhain or Halloween

Samhain, [pronounced "sow-in" (where "ow" rhymes with "cow")], was
celebrated by the Celts from October 31 to November 2 as days of no
time when chaos ruled. "People did crazy things, men dressed as
women, and women as men. Farmers’ gates were unhinged and left in
ditches, peoples’ horses were moved to different fields, and children
would knock on neighbors’ doors for food and treats in a way that we
still find today . . . in the custom of trick-or-treating on Halloween.”

The Druids however celebrated differently. "Behind this apparent lunacy,
lay a deeper meaning. The Druids knew that these three days" were the
time when "the veil between this world and the World of the Ancestors
was drawn aside ... and journeys could be made to the ‘other side’. The
Druid rites, therefore, were concerned with making contact with the spirits
of the departed, who were seen as sources of guidance and inspiration."
The Ovates officiated at these rites, because they were skilled in divination
and spiritual travel.

Ovate was the second step to becoming a Druid. Ovates "were responsible
for understanding the mysteries of death and rebirth . . . for divinizing the
future" and for "conversing with the ancestors.” The Druids believed that
time was cyclical and not linear. Therefore, the Ovate was also trained in
spiritual time travel. They viewed the realm of the ancestors not as a realm
of the dead, but as the repository of tribal wisdom where the ancestor
awaited reincarnation. The O.B.O.D. quotes Ceasar from the
de Bello Gallico, "The cardinal doctrine which they seek to teach is that
souls do not die, but after death pass from one to another..."
[Reincarnation] This view of death is a less fearful image than simply not
existing anymore. And by observing nature’s cycles of birth, death, and
rebirth the modern ovate can apply natural law towards the healing of the
human body and psyche.

Today Pagans see Samhain as a time to honor the dead, not as the dead,
but as the living spirits of loved ones and as guardians who hold the wisdom
of mankind. It is a celebration of the afterlife where we do not die but rest
and continue to learn and prepare for our next incarnation.
